New Barrier Film From Sealed Air Brings Clear Toothpaste Tube to Life
DUNCAN, S.C. (Nov. 18, 2008) – A new ultraviolet light barrier film developed by Sealed Air is the key component in a unique clear tube for an oral care application.
Producing this material was not as simple as the clear packaging might suggest. The new film, developed in conjunction with Colgate-Palmolive®, protects the ingredients that give the toothpaste its color. If not for the new barrier film, the toothpaste’s color would fade in the presence of ultraviolet light.
“Colgate® approached us with a challenge and asked us to help create something that is new to North America – a clear toothpaste tube with UV light barrier,” said Joe Ramirez, Manager of New Business Development for Sealed Air. “We are excited about this ground-breaking film, which we feel could change the face of oral care packaging.”
A key benefit of the clear film is that consumers can see the tube’s contents and can easily tell how much toothpaste remains. In addition to toothpaste, the new clear film can be used for a variety of other applications like creams, lotions and food products where UV light barrier protection is important.
Colgate-Palmolive®, which has been interested in a clear toothpaste tube for about a decade, launched the new tube nationwide in August under the Max Fresh® with Mouthwash Beads product line, an extension of the Max Fresh® brand. The new tube is available at a number of retailers nationwide.
