Picturing the future of pork: A snapshot of the pork industry’s future
June 2009
Sealed Air Cryovac welcomed over 100 international industry leaders on June 3-4 at its “Picturing the Future of Pork” event at Packforum® in Paris. The programme included expert presentations, interactive workshops, demonstrations and opportunities for attendees to network with their peers.
Industry trends of tomorrow
Guest speakers included Gira, a Swiss firm specialising in food market research and consultancy. Gira predicted worldwide pork consumption would increase, driven primarily by the Chinese market. The firm also emphasised the importance of addressing retailers’ priorities: merchandising, saving shelf space, and improving safety, convenience and appeal.
What do they really think? Consumers on pork
The British Pig Executive (BPEX), which promotes British pork products in Britain and around the world, reported the results of a research study on consumers’ image of pork. While people who regularly consume pork are satisfied with the meat, particularly with its flavour, others perceive it as old fashioned, fatty, cheap or feel it has an unappealing colour. The study also found that consumers think there is a lack of media, retailer and industry coverage promoting pork consumption.
The road to more sustainable pork production
Speaking at the event, UK based pig breeding specialists JSR Genetics offered participants insight into the pork industry’s environmental challenges. Worldwide livestock production currently accounts for 18% of the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere—more than the entire transport industry. While genetic improvement techniques have reduced emissions, progress still needs to be made in how farms, manure, animals and feeding are managed.
Cutting-edge pork packaging solutions
Sealed Air Cryovac experts gave attendees an exclusive preview of the new Cryovac Mirabella® rigid offer and presented DarfeshBloom® and Cryovac BDF®. These convenient packaging solutions for case-ready meats preserve product taste, colour and feel; extend shelf life; save shelf space and improve consumers’ perception of meat value.
Participants also had the opportunity to attend tailored sessions such as ‘Pack Your Own Products’, made possible by the unique facilities and equipment at Packforum®.
A shining prospect: case-ready pork in EMEA
The success of the event reflects the bright future of the EMEA case-ready pork industry. In Europe, pork consumption is expected to keep growing. As more and more European households buy meat through modern retailers rather than traditional outlets, self service has taken the place of over the counter sales. These trends indicate that the case ready pork market will continue to expand. Though cutting-edge innovations such as Mirabella, DarfeshBloom® and Cryovac BDF®, Sealed Air Cryovac looks to contribute to the development of the case-ready pork industry and promote pork consumption in the EMEA region.
Make it through the Storm
"Weathering the Storm and Leading Change."
April, 2009
As a company obsessed with customer satisfaction and with the need to continue to innovate to win through in the current economic climate, Sealed Air Cryovac® hosted an exceptional 2-day, cross-market seminar addressing the key issues facing the food packaging business.
First one the podium were international consultants A. T. Kearney, who delivered a specific economic overview of the European and global marketplaces followed by European case studies focusing on the key business issues of sustainability, cost optimisation, branding and innovation. This in turn was followed by Cryovac® specialists and experts with a comprehensive presentation on the topics of new markets penetration and innovative merchandising solutions.
This was supported by an eye-opening paper by colour psychologist Erich Chiavi, who illustrated how colours impacted on consumer packaging choices.
The interactive event was rounded off by questions and answer sessions, workshops on critical success factors, a roadshow and the customised packaging of new products.
"This pan-European event covered all market segments and was a great opportunity to network and exchange ideas with peers and colleagues at a moment where creativity and out-of-the-box thinking are more important than ever!", was just one delegate comment after the two-day event.
